I firmly believe that domains are a great investment and the whole industry is in its infancy right now.
If you have a couple hundred dollars free, I can see no better place as to where you could put your money right now.

I just purchased today 12 .info domains. There is a sale over at domaindiscover.com - .info domain for only $0.88. I know what they say about info domains but these are great for me to experiment.
What are you talking about? Domains were an “investment” 5 years ago. Not now.
Jaro,
I think .info domains are still good and suit content sites.
Techie,
I think we had the dot com crash a few years ago, but people are starting to realize the value again of a good domain.
Take a look at dnjournal.com and the domain show on webmasterradio.fm
An example from dnjournal:
Tessoro Media Limited reluctantly let go of one of their most prized possessions this week. It took $450,000 to persuade the company to part with a real gem, Templates.com, in a private transaction. Their return on investment certainly must have eased the pain of letting go though. They had acquired the domain for $43,000 just two years ago.
Have to agree with you, here. I don’t think the idea is to buy a domain name with the sole intent of selling it, but rather to develop something there.
Squatting is annoying … why not develop?
My personal feeling is that non .com extensions aren’t much of an investment. While there may be a few exceptions to the rule, in general it is true. I have one non .com in the domains I have and it is a .net and I’m still not sure if it was a good choice.
There are a few exceptions. People like .com, not .info. Templates is easily remembered and already has the hits.
It’s one out of how many domains for sale that ACTUALLY sold? For every one success story, there are hundreds of thousands of other failures. The olds of selling a domain for $450,000 is only slightly better than you winning the lottery.
Larger companies- domain portfolio holders- obviously have the marketing skills, networking opportunities, and the sheer number of sites to succeed. The average person’s chances are far fewer.
.com is definitely better. You will loose a lot of people if you can only get the .net or .org
The average person won’t succeed if they don’t research the industry. If people do research, I believe there is good potential. Like any other investment not everyone will make money.
For people who think that all good domain names are already taken, companies are bringing out new products all of the time. Movies, books, famous people can all be potentially profitable.
I also had a problem with so called squatters a while back, but if you listen to these people, they are just running a business and aren’t doing anything bad in my opinion. My attitude has changed in this regard more recently.
If you have the time I suggest listening to the domain show on webmasterradio, it is one of the most interesting for me.
